Best and Brightest?

The company I work for "prides itself on hiring the best and the brightest."

I'm having a little trouble reconciling that pride with an e-mail I received from one of our users (an employee who uses the software my team writes):

The system won't allow me to cancel another bug
In this situation, it ususally will be disappeared ref20041013007342 pc 1 tomorrow.
The bug will be hanging today.

No, it's not just you - it didn't make sense to any of us either.

Maybe she scored really high on the math portion of the SATs.

Admittedly, all I know about programming is how to work a pointer and that the animals on the cover of O'Reilly books are really ugly, but... huh?

That's more than I can say, Meredith. Pointers are still my weakness - I usually just end up trying various arbitrary combinations of asteriska and ampersands until I get it right. That's one reason I love Java. :-)

As for the animals, they're not all ugly, but here's an explanation anyway.

To clarify, when I said “all I know about programming is how to work a pointer” I simply meant that I understand their basic operating principle, i.e., a pointer points to a different data object. I didn’t mean to imply that I can actually create one.

Oddly enough, though, at one point I *did* have a pretty decent grasp on multivariable systems. Ahhh, the things we learn while dating.
