Hirschfeld Archive

The New York Times nina has up a great archive of over nina 100 works of the late, great Al Hirschfeld. Unfortunately, nina most of the images are too small to be much fun nina, but they're still nice to look at. nina

What's NINA?

Posted by: Jessica at May 6, 2004 7:53 PM

Hirschfeld put his daughter's(?) name (Nina) in his line drawings, usually multiple times, blending in with the rest of the lines of the drawing (sometimes better than others). The number of Ninas in each particular picture is on the side, right next to his signature. They are really fun to find - especially in ones with lots of Ninas.
HINT: They are often hidden in things like hair or curtains where there are lots of lines.

See, for example, this one. The little "5" in the bottom right corner means that the name "NINA" is incorporated into the picture 5 times. Check out the dress and the sleeves for 3 of them, but the other two seem to be too small (in this copy) to find. My first guess, though, would be the feathers in her hat.

I can see 2 in the feathers of the hat, plus is that one in the glove?

Unfortunately, the archive doesn't contain my fave Hirschfeld, since it's not a theater-based one:

Hirschfeld was commissioned to do a portrait of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, and he hid the Ninas in Hebrew (Nun-yud-nun-aleph)! What I wouldn't give for a print of that one...

Shosh, I think you're right about the feathers, now that I look closely. The glove, on the other hand, seems to be a false lead.

You mean this one? It can be yours for the low, low price of only $1800! Are we to take your closing lament literally?

Wow. Rereading my comment after I posted it, I notice the blatant pun that somehow snuck its way into the second sentence. Absolutely unintentional, I tell you. I suppose it's just so ingrained in my psyche, after too many years living with this guy.

Yep, that's the one... you can also find a picture of it here .

You most certainly may take my closing lament literally... $1800 is certainly what I wouldn't give for that print (what, you think you're the only one who still bears psychological scars from your old roomie?)
